Spring and fall are the best times to visit Kentucky, especially if you plan to spend time outdoors, tour horse farms, or drive through the countryside.
Spring brings mild temperatures, green landscapes, and major events such as the Kentucky Derby. Louisville becomes especially busy in late April and early May, so hotels and reservations should be booked early.
Fall is ideal for scenic drives, hiking, and exploring smaller towns without the heat and humidity of summer. October is particularly popular because of the cooler weather and changing leaves.
Summer can be hot and humid, but it is still a good time for caves, museums, lakes, and indoor attractions. Winter is quieter and can be less expensive, although some outdoor attractions operate on reduced schedules.
Kentucky’s top attractions include a mix of horse country, bourbon history, city museums, caves, and outdoor scenery.
In Louisville, visit Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Derby Museum, the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, and the Muhammad Ali Center. Lexington is the center of Kentucky horse country, with Keeneland, the Kentucky Horse Park, and guided horse farm tours nearby.
Bourbon distillery tours are spread across Louisville, Lexington, Bardstown, Frankfort, and smaller towns throughout central Kentucky. Even if you do not drink, the history, architecture, and production process can still make the tours interesting.
Mammoth Cave National Park is one of the state’s biggest natural attractions, while Red River Gorge, Natural Bridge, and Cumberland Falls are popular for hiking and scenic views.
Smaller towns such as Bardstown, Berea, and Georgetown are also good additions for local restaurants, historic streets, shops, and a slower pace.
The best airport depends on which part of Kentucky you plan to visit.
Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport is the most convenient option for Louisville, Bardstown, and much of north-central Kentucky. Blue Grass Airport in Lexington is best for Lexington, Keeneland, the Kentucky Horse Park, and the surrounding horse country.
Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is a good choice for northern Kentucky and may offer more flight options. Nashville International Airport can also work well for Bowling Green, Mammoth Cave, and southern Kentucky.
For a longer road trip, compare one-way rental car prices and consider flying into one airport and out of another.

Time Zone

A car is the easiest way to explore Kentucky. Public transportation is available in Louisville and Lexington, but most horse farms, distilleries, caves, parks, and smaller towns are spread out.
Downtown Louisville is fairly walkable around Museum Row and Whiskey Row, while central Lexington is easy to explore in sections. Outside those areas, a rental car or rideshare is usually necessary.
Allow extra driving time on rural roads, especially in horse country and eastern Kentucky. Roads can be narrow, curving, and slower than they appear on a map.
