North Carolina

North Carolina is one of those states that quietly does everything well—mountains, beaches, small towns, iconic cities, food, history, and plenty of scenic spots you’ll want to pull over and photograph. Whether you’re hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains, exploring the Outer Banks, or eating your way through Asheville, North Carolina is the kind of destination that keeps surprising you in the best way. This guide covers everything you need to plan your trip and start exploring North Carolina like a pro.

Best Time to Visit

North Carolina is a true four-season state, so the “best” time depends on your vibe.

  • Spring (March–May): Wildflowers, mild temps, and perfect hiking weather.

  • Summer (June–August): Ideal for beach trips, lake days, and waterfall chasing—just expect some heat and humidity.

  • Fall (September–November): Peak leaf-peeping season in the Blue Ridge Mountains. If you want the famous fall colors, this is your moment.

  • Winter (December–February): Great for quieter travel, mountain cabins, ski trips, and festive small-town charm.

Top Things to Do

Explore the Blue Ridge Mountains

The western side of North Carolina is an outdoor playground—hiking, scenic overlooks, waterfalls, and the famous Blue Ridge Parkway.

Visit Asheville

Craft breweries, incredible food, artsy neighborhoods, and the historic Biltmore Estate make Asheville one of North Carolina’s most popular stops.

Relax in the Outer Banks

Miles of beaches, lighthouse hopping, wild horses, and coastal towns with tons of character. If you want a laid-back beach vacation, the Outer Banks delivers.

Discover Charlotte

North Carolina’s biggest city has pro sports, rooftop bars, museums, and a growing food scene worth checking out.

Explore Wilmington & the Coast

Historic downtown, riverfront views, and easy access to Wrightsville Beach make Wilmington a great coastal home base.

Small Town Road Trips

Boone, Blowing Rock, Bryson City, Highlands, and Beaufort are all charming, scenic, and very “main-character energy.”

Travel information

Getting There

Most travelers fly into one of North Carolina’s main airports:

  • CLT (Charlotte Douglas International Airport): The biggest hub with the most direct flights.

  • RDU (Raleigh-Durham International Airport): Great for exploring the Triangle area and central NC.

  • GSO (Piedmont Triad International Airport): Convenient for Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and surrounding areas.
If you’re driving, the state is easily accessible from most of the East Coast via I-40, I-85, and I-95.

Travel Tips

  • Expect some driving. North Carolina’s highlights are spread out—worth it, but plan for road time.

  • Book fall trips early. The Blue Ridge Mountains sell out fast during leaf season.

  • Layers are your friend. Mountain weather can change fast, even in summer.

  • Plan a mix of cities and nature. North Carolina is at its best when you combine both.

  • Try the local foods. Cheerwine, biscuits, barbecue, and boiled peanuts—trust me, just do it.

Getting Around

North Carolina is a big state, so renting a car is the easiest and most flexible option—especially if you’re heading to the mountains or the coast.
In major cities like Charlotte, Raleigh, and Durham, you can get around with rideshares, public transit, and walkable neighborhoods. But for road trips, scenic drives, and exploring small towns, a car is essential.

The tulip fields in the Netherlands look exactly like the photos, except the photos don’t capture how massive the color blocks actually are stretching across the countryside. Or the windmills. Or the sheep randomly standing in the middle of everything like they don’t know they’re in the most photogenic country on earth.

The honest caveat: tulip season moves fast, the fields rotate every year, and peak bloom is not a guarantee, it depends on the weather, the harvest schedule, and a little bit of luck. But that’s also part of what makes it feel less like a tourist attraction and more like something you actually found.

Amsterdam has a way of making you feel like you need to see everything, and then rewarding you most when you slow down anyway. The museums and canal cruises are worth it, but so is just wandering neighborhoods, eating whatever looks good, and sitting along the canals with a grilled cheese and nowhere to be.

There’s a version of Gatlinburg that’s all fudge shops and tourist crowds, and then there’s the version that actually makes you want to come back.

Here’s everything worth doing downtown, in the order I’d do it: 🏔️

✨ Start at @gatlinburgskypark before the crowds hit
✨ Walk the strip mid-morning when it’s still manageable
✨ @googooclusters stop (see my post from Tuesday: don’t skip it)
✨ Dinner at one of the local spots off the main drag
✨ Wander back out at night when the lights are on and it gets actually pretty

This isn’t your overscheduled Smoky Mountain itinerary. It’s more of a “here’s what I’d actually do if I had one solid day” kind of list.

If someone told me I’d spend five hours at SkyPark, I would not have believed them. And yet. 😅

Gatlinburg SkyPark sits above the strip and it’s one of those places that looks like a quick stop on paper and turns into most of your afternoon. The SkyBridge alone is worth it — longest pedestrian suspension bridge in North America, and yes, you will look down.

✨ SkyBridge (longest pedestrian suspension bridge in North America)
✨ SkyLift ride up with views of the Smokies
✨ Walking trails with mountain views in every direction
✨ Way less crowded than downtown

Fair warning: if heights genuinely freak you out, the bridge might not be your thing. The rest of the park is still 100% worth it. Full guide with tickets, tips, and what to skip linked in bio. 🔗
