Lilou Knoxville Review: What I Loved (and What I’d Skip) at This French Restaurant

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked past Lilou without realizing it was there. Tucked inside Hotel Cleo on Gay Street in downtown Knoxville, it’s easy to miss—until you see someone’s meal on Instagram. That’s exactly what happened to me. One scroll through my feed, and I knew I had to make a reservation. So for this Lilou Knoxville review, I’m sharing everything we ordered, what surprised me, and what I would personally skip next time.

After spending the evening sampling everything from a house-made baguette and imported French cheeses to flaming French onion soup and crème brûlée, I completely understood why people rave about it.

Lilou Knoxville review at Hotel Cleo on Gay Street

About Lilou Brasserie

Lilou Brasserie is an upscale French restaurant inside Hotel Cleo on Gay Street in downtown Knoxville.

Chef John Hasentufel, whose experience includes Blackberry Farm, Elle DC, and Chef & The Farmer, builds on the classic brasserie menu created by founding French Chef Benjamin Tilatti. The menu changes seasonally and uses ingredients from quality producers in the region.

Lilou also has an impressive French cheese program created and led by ACS-Certified Maître Fromager Jessica Benoit. The restaurant offers a rotating collection of imported French cheeses, so the exact selection may be different every time you visit.

The all-French wine list is curated by owner and Wine Director Aaron Thompson along with Lilou’s team of sommeliers. It represents every wine region in France, is among the largest all-French wine lists in the Southeastern United States, and has received a Wine Spectator Award since 2024.

I do not drink wine, but it was still obvious that a lot of care went into every part of the experience.

Lilou Knoxville review of the vintage French-inspired dining room and floral décor

The Atmosphere at Lilou

The restaurant has a very French atmosphere with a vintage feel.

The walls are filled with old-fashioned picture frames, floral details, and décor that reminded me of a s

mall café in France. It felt romantic and high-end, but it did not feel overly formal or uncomfortable.

Although Lilou is inside a hotel, it did not feel like a typical hotel restaurant. The dining room has its own personality, and once we were seated, I almost forgot we were in downtown Knoxville.

Reservations at Lilou

Lilou is a reservation-based restaurant, so I recommend booking ahead, especially if you are hoping to visit on a weekend or for a special occasion.

There is a 15-minute grace period for your entire party to arrive. The restaurant asks guests to call if they expect to be later than that.

Reservations also come with an allotted dining time based on the size of your group:

  • One to two guests: two hours
  • Four to six guests: two hours and 30 minutes
  • Seven or more guests: three hours

Lilou asks diners to stay within that reserved window so the next reservation can be seated on time. If you want a longer and more relaxed evening, the restaurant recommends reserving a table after 8:30 p.m.

Booths are generally reserved for groups of five or more. Parties larger than ten should contact the restaurant directly by phone or email. An automatic 20% gratuity may also be added to groups of eight or more.

Lilou’s full-service bar is open daily and does not require a reservation, so stopping by the bar may be an option if you do not have a table booked.

Lilou Hours

Lilou is open for:

  • Dinner seven days a week
  • Breakfast Monday through Friday
  • Jazz Brunch on Saturday and Sunday

The bar is open until 11:00 p.m. on weekdays and midnight on weekends.

Because restaurant hours and menus can change, I would still confirm the current schedule before visiting.

Parking Near Lilou

Parking was much easier than I expected.

We parked in the State Street Garage, and it was a super easy walk to the restaurant. Lilou also notes that street parking is generally available, along with three major parking garages within approximately one block:

  • Promenade Garage at 401 State Street
  • State Street Garage at 500 State Street
  • Market Square Garage at 402 Walnut Street

Lilou Knoxville review featuring the seasonal charcuterie board with French meats

We Visited During Happy Hour

We went during happy hour, which was the perfect way to experience Lilou because we could try several different dishes rather than ordering only one entrée each.

I love tasting a little bit of everything, and this menu worked really well for sharing. It also gave us the chance to try the imported meats, French cheeses, soup, salad, pasta, bread, and desserts during one visit.

Beurre & Baguette

The Beurre & Baguette was absolutely amazing.

The house-made French baguette was crunchy on the outside but incredibly soft on the inside. Sometimes French baguettes can become so hard that they are almost difficult to chew, but this one was soft, fresh, and perfect.

It was served with imported French salted butter that was rich, creamy, and delicious.

I know bread and butter sounds like a simple recommendation when there is an entire French menu in front of you, but it may have been one of my favorite parts of the meal.

I would order it every single time.

Imported French Cheese Plate

We ordered the Plate of Three from Lilou’s rotating imported French cheese selection.

The cheese menu changes, and the restaurant’s cheese program is curated by its maître fromager. On the menu during our visit, the selections included cheeses such as Saint Agur, Valençay, Comté AOC, Petit Basque, Roulé, Mimolette, and D’Affinois.

Rather than choosing the cheeses ourselves, we let them select three for us.

Our plate included a firm cheese, a soft and creamy cheese, and a blue cheese. Each one had a completely different texture and flavor, which made it much more interesting than ordering three similar options.

The cheeses were paired with homemade jam, house-made crackers, and baguette.

Everything worked really well together, and I liked not knowing exactly what we were going to receive. It felt like a small tasting experience rather than simply ordering a cheese board.

Charcuterie

We also ordered the charcuterie board, which includes a rotating selection of imported French meats.

The menu listed accompaniments such as cornichons, whole-grain mustard, seasonal jam, and toasted sourdough crostini.

The staff explained that the meats rotate seasonally throughout the year, so your board may be different depending on when you visit.

The charcuterie and cheese plate were especially good together. I would recommend ordering both if you are visiting with someone who enjoys sharing several small bites.

Save this for later on Pinterest so you don’t forget it.

Petite Salad

I honestly did not expect the salad to stand out as much as it did.

The Petite Salad includes frisée, lemon vinaigrette, and beet pickles. Frisée has a slightly bitter or tart flavor, but the dressing balanced it perfectly.

It was light and fresh but still had enough flavor to make it memorable. The combination of the bitter greens, bright vinaigrette, and pickled beets worked much better than I expected.

Sometimes a salad feels like something you order because you think you should. This one was actually worth ordering.

French Onion Soup

The French onion soup was one of the most memorable dishes because they brought it to the table flaming.

The soup is made with onion broth, Emmental cheese, and toasted brioche. As the top caramelized, it gave the cheese an almost slightly sweet flavor.

The broth was rich and very flavorful, and I loved the bread soaking underneath the cheese.

However, it was salty.

I love salt, and even I thought it was almost a little too salty. If you do not like salty food, I do not think this will be the soup for you.

It was still delicious, and the flaming presentation was really cool, but the amount of salt is something I would want to know before ordering it.

Lilou Knoxville review of the light duck pasta served at Lilou Brasserie

Duck Pasta

We also tried the duck pasta.

The duck was cooked well, and the pasta had a fresh lemon flavor that made the dish feel lighter than I expected.

The sauce was very thin and almost felt more like a broth or soup than a traditional pasta sauce. It was not bad at all. It just was not my personal preference.

I tend to like hearty pasta dishes with a thicker, richer sauce, so this was probably not the best choice for me.

Someone who likes lighter, citrus-forward pasta may enjoy it much more.

Lilou Knoxville review featuring the crème brûlée with a crisp caramelized sugar top

Save Room for Dessert

We ordered two desserts because obviously we needed to fully investigate the dessert menu.

Crème Brûlée

The crème brûlée was excellent.

The top had that crisp caramelized sugar layer that cracks when you tap it with your spoon, and the vanilla custard underneath was smooth, creamy, and rich.

This was easily my favorite of the two desserts.

I would absolutely order it again.

Beignets

We also ordered the beignets.

They were light and freshly made, but they were not sweet enough for us.

That may be closer to what a traditional French beignet is supposed to taste like, but we personally prefer beignets that are noticeably sweeter.

If you enjoy more subtle desserts, you may like them. If you are expecting something very sweet or covered in a heavy layer of powdered sugar, they may not be what you are expecting.

Lilou Knoxville review of the vintage French-inspired dining room and floral décor

Service at Lilou

The service matched the higher-end atmosphere.

Our server took the time to explain the rotating meats and cheeses, answered our questions about the menu, and helped us understand what we were ordering.

We never felt rushed, even though Lilou uses timed reservation windows.

That balance is important. The restaurant felt organized, but the meal still felt relaxed.

What I Loved at Lilou

The things I would most recommend are the French-inspired vintage atmosphere, the house-made baguette with imported French salted butter, the rotating imported cheese plate, and the charcuterie.

I was also surprised by how much I liked the Petite Salad. The tableside flaming presentation of the French onion soup made it memorable, and the crème brûlée was easily one of my favorite parts of the meal. Visiting during happy hour was also a great choice because it gave us the chance to try several different dishes.

What I Would Skip

I would not say these dishes were poorly made. They simply did not match my personal preferences. I would skip the French onion soup if you are sensitive to salt.

I would skip the duck pasta if you prefer thick, creamy, or hearty pasta sauces. I would skip the beignets if you like your desserts on the sweeter side.

Is Lilou Good for a Date Night?

Yes. Lilou is a great date night restaurant in Knoxville.

The dining room feels romantic, the menu encourages you to slow down and share several dishes, and the experience feels special enough for an anniversary or celebration.

I would also recommend it for birthday dinners, adults’ nights out, and anyone who is genuinely interested in French food, imported cheeses, or a more elevated dining experience.

Is Lilou Good for Children?

I personally would not choose Lilou for young children.

The restaurant is high-end, the food choices are more suited to a special occasion dinner, and the atmosphere is quieter and more intimate.

That does not mean children are not allowed. It simply would not be my first choice for a casual family dinner.

Final Thoughts on My Lilou Knoxville Review

I can honestly see why Lilou has become such a popular spot in Knoxville. It feels like a restaurant that's meant to be enjoyed slowly—sharing a few dishes, trying something new, and lingering over dessert instead of rushing through dinner.

If that's your idea of a great night out, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I do not like seafood. 🐟 So when I booked a tasting menu at a restaurant built around aquarium walls at Atlantis The Palm, I was nervous.

Here’s the honest part: they have a vegetarian tasting menu, and I assumed it would be an afterthought. It ended up in my top five meals of all time.
