Best Breakfast in Key West: From Bakeries to Brunch Spots

If you are trying to figure out the best breakfast in Key West, the good news is that you have options beyond the standard hotel buffet situation.

Key West has classic breakfast cafés, French bakeries, serious coffee shops, brunch spots, and quieter hotel restaurants. Some places are better for a full sit-down breakfast. Some are better for a pastry and coffee before walking around Old Town. Some are better for a slower brunch experience. And some are just practical because they open early and get the job done well.

This guide includes the Key West breakfast spots I visited, plus a few that stayed high on my researched list and would be easy additions to a first-time Key West itinerary.

If you are planning your full trip, I would pair this with my Key West Travel Guide for First Time Visitors so you can figure out where breakfast fits into the rest of your days.

Best Breakfast in Key West: Quick Tips Before You Go

If you are hoping to avoid long waits, going earlier in the morning is usually your safest bet.

That was definitely true for us at Sunny Eggs Café. We arrived right at 7:00 AM and had no wait at all, but when we walked by on a weekend around 10:30 AM, there were probably 15 people waiting outside.

So yes, breakfast timing can matter in Key West. Apparently everyone wakes up late and hungry, then decides to brunch at the exact same time. Very efficient of us.

If you are staying in Old Town, I would plan most breakfast stops around walking instead of trying to drive from place to place. A lot of the best bakeries, cafés, and brunch spots are tucked into busy areas near Duval Street and the historic district.

For a faster morning, choose a Key West coffee shop or bakery. For a slower morning, go for a full breakfast restaurant or brunch spot.

If you only have a short visit and want to plan food around sightseeing, my One Day in Key West Itinerary (Perfect for Cruise Passengers & First-Time Visitors) would be a good place to start.

Best Breakfast in Key West for a Classic Sit-Down Meal

Sunny Eggs Café

Sunny Eggs Café is a great choice if you want a classic breakfast in Key West with a large menu and plenty of options. It serves breakfast all day and has both indoor and outdoor seating, which makes it an easy stop if you are exploring Old Town.

We arrived right at 7:00 AM and had no wait. It was a holiday on a Monday, so I’m not sure if that is always typical, but we were the first people there.

By about 7:15 AM, a couple more families and a few solo diners had arrived. When we walked by on a weekend around 10:30 AM, though, there were probably 15 people waiting outside.

So if you are hoping to avoid a wait, early is definitely the move.

I started with one of their fresh juices called the Green Shade, made with cucumber, pineapple juice, apple juice, and lemon juice. It was light, refreshing, and a nice change from the usual breakfast drinks.

I also ordered a caramel latte, and we shared some of their fresh bakery items, which are worth looking at when you walk in.

For breakfast, we ordered the Palm Breakfast, which came with two eggs, bacon, roasted tomato, roasted potatoes, avocado, and toast.

Sometimes a simple breakfast is exactly what you want on vacation, and this was a solid, filling option without being overly heavy.

The menu at Sunny Eggs is large. They have omelets, Eggs Benedict, pancakes, French toast, breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burritos, skillets, avocado toast, smoked salmon dishes, Greek yogurt parfaits, homemade pastries, and baked egg cocotte dishes with ingredients like salmon, lobster, chorizo, vegetables, and mushrooms.

The drink menu is also more extensive than I expected. They offer specialty coffee drinks, lattes, cappuccinos, fresh-squeezed orange juice, house-made juices, and fruit smoothies made with ingredients like mango, pineapple, cucumber, spinach, carrot, apple, and ginger.

If you are looking for a traditional American breakfast in Key West with a lot of choices, Sunny Eggs Café is an easy pick.

Best Coffee Shops in Key West

Doing Work Coffee

Doing Work Coffee was one of the more interesting coffee stops we visited in Key West.

The shop focuses on sustainably sourced coffee, and the owner, Daniel, travels to coffee-growing regions around the world, including Honduras, Peru, and Papua New Guinea, to source beans directly. He then brings the beans back to Key West and roasts them himself.

One of the most unique things they do is barrel-age some of their coffee in rum barrels from First Legal Rum Distillery.

The process takes a couple of months, so unfortunately we were not able to try that batch yet. But it is a pretty cool concept and something I would absolutely look for if I were visiting again later.

We tried the blueberry muffin, iced chai latte, and iced mocha. The blueberry muffin was fresh and had good blueberries, but it was a little dry.

The iced chai latte was absolutely amazing. I added a shot of vanilla, and it was really good. The iced mocha was also excellent.

If you are a coffee person, I would order from Doing Work Coffee again. I would come here more for the drinks than the pastries.

Funky Rooster Coffee House & Wine Bar

Funky Rooster Coffee House & Wine Bar is a locally owned coffee shop in Key West with a relaxed, eclectic atmosphere.

They serve specialty coffee, espresso drinks, tea, cold brew, locally roasted coffee, pastries, breakfast sandwiches, avocado toast, and other light café-style food. They also serve wine and beer later in the day.

If I were just looking for a casual coffee in the morning, this is probably where I would go.

They have a lot of really cool local artwork throughout the space, and it feels like somewhere you can grab a coffee and hang out for a while instead of feeling rushed out the door.

The atmosphere is what stands out most. It feels more like a neighborhood coffee shop than a tourist stop, which is always nice in a destination as busy as Key West.

If you want a laid-back coffee shop with a local feel, Funky Rooster is a good place to sit, relax, and start your day.

Save this for later on Pinterest so you don’t forget it.

Best breakfast in Key West garden patio at a quiet Old Town bakery

Best Bakeries in Key West

Old Town Bakery

For a bakery stop, I would head to Old Town Bakery.

It is a small, locally owned bakery tucked inside a historic conch house in Old Town Key West. They also have a quiet garden patio, which makes it a good spot to linger over coffee before starting your day.

Everything is baked fresh daily, and they serve pastries, breads, breakfast sandwiches, quiche, soups, salads, and sandwiches made on their house-baked bread.

If I were stopping in, I would order the sticky bun, which is probably the pastry people talk about most. I would get that with a coffee and a seat out in the garden.

Their cinnamon rolls, croissants, Key lime bars, and breakfast sandwiches also get a lot of love.

What people seem to love most is not just the food. It is the atmosphere. It feels less like a tourist stop and more like a neighborhood bakery where locals actually hang out.

The garden seating gets mentioned over and over, and a lot of visitors say they end up returning multiple times during their trip.

One thing to know: if you have your heart set on a specific pastry, get there earlier in the morning. The most popular items have a habit of disappearing before lunchtime.

If you are looking for a relaxed coffee-and-pastry morning in Key West, Old Town Bakery would be one of my top picks. It has that “found it on day one and now I need an excuse to go back” feeling.

La Grignote

La Grignote is a French bakery and café located right on Duval Street. Everything is made from scratch in-house, and the pastry case alone is enough reason to stop in.

If I were ordering here, I would start with the almond croissant and absolutely save room for the pistachio cake, which has become one of the bakery’s most talked-about desserts.

Their Eggs Benedict, quiche, macarons, and pastries are also standout menu items.

What I like about La Grignote is that it works for more than one type of breakfast. You can sit down for a full meal, or you can keep it simple with a pastry and coffee.

That is helpful in Key West because some mornings are full breakfast mornings, and some mornings are “please give me caffeine and something flaky before I walk around in the heat” mornings.

Just keep in mind that La Grignote can get busy, especially later in the morning.

Frenchie’s Café

Frenchie’s Café is a French-inspired breakfast and lunch café tucked into Old Town Key West. It has a quieter neighborhood feel, charming garden seating, and a menu focused on classic French café favorites.

If I were eating here, I would go straight for the quiche and a croissant. Those are the items Frenchie’s is best known for, along with strong coffee and simple French pastries.

This would be a good fit if you want a traditional French café breakfast in Key West without going straight into a big brunch production.

If you are looking for something quieter, simple, and classic, Frenchie’s would be high on my list.

Best Brunch in Key West

Tempt at The Saint Hotel

If you are looking for a brunch that feels a little different from the usual pancakes and omelets, Tempt at The Saint Hotel is a good one to consider.

Tempt is located inside the adults-only Saint Hotel just off Duval Street, and the restaurant has a more modern, upscale feel than many of the traditional breakfast spots in Key West.

What makes it unique is the Sunday brunch format. Instead of ordering one entrée, brunch is centered around unlimited small plates, so you can try a variety of different dishes throughout the meal.

This is more of a brunch experience than a quick breakfast stop.

The atmosphere is one of the biggest draws. It feels intimate and stylish without being stuffy, which makes it a good option for a girls’ trip, couples getaway, or anyone who wants something different from the typical Key West breakfast scene.

If I were planning a Sunday in Key West, I would put Tempt in the “brunch experience” category instead of the “grab a quick breakfast before sightseeing” category.

This is where you settle in for a while, order a mimosa if that is your thing, and make brunch part of the day’s plans.

Best Quieter Breakfast in Key West

Café Marquesa

If you are looking for a quieter breakfast that feels a little more elevated than the typical Key West breakfast spot, Café Marquesa is a strong option.

Café Marquesa is located inside The Marquesa Hotel in Old Town and is known for excellent service, fresh ingredients, and one of the prettiest dining settings in Key West.

Breakfast is served daily, and the menu includes things like Eggs Benedict, waffles, breakfast sandwiches, fresh pastries, coffee, and juices. The restaurant is also known for its house-made breads, which get mentioned a lot by returning guests, including me!

What stands out most about Café Marquesa is the overall experience. It feels tucked away from the crowds, and the atmosphere is much quieter than many of the popular breakfast spots around town.

If you are looking for a leisurely breakfast where you can sit and enjoy your coffee without feeling rushed, this would be a great choice.

A lot of people return here year after year because of the combination of the food, service, and beautiful setting. It does not get the same attention as some of the trendier breakfast spots, but it consistently earns a loyal following.

If you are staying at The Marquesa or thinking about booking a boutique hotel in Old Town, I also have a full Hotel Marquesa Review: Is This the Best Boutique Hotel in Key West? with more details on the property.

If I were choosing between standing in line for brunch somewhere or having a relaxed breakfast in a beautiful hotel setting, Café Marquesa would be very tempting.

Best Breakfast in Key West for Something Different

The Koffie House

The Koffie House is a great breakfast and lunch spot if you want something a little different from the standard Key West breakfast menu.

The menu has a Mediterranean influence with dishes like shakshuka, Turkish eggs, breakfast bowls, halloumi, hummus, and quinoa. They also serve pancakes, French toast, and breakfast sandwiches, so it still works if someone in your group wants a more familiar breakfast.

If you are a coffee person, they also have espresso drinks, matcha, chai, smoothies, and fresh juices.

I would choose this spot for a slower breakfast before heading out to explore Key West, especially if I wanted something fresh but not boring.

Best breakfast in Key West at Pepe's in Old Town

Honorable Mention: Pepe’s Café

Pepe’s Café deserves an honorable mention because it is such a Key West classic.

I did not include it as one of the main breakfast picks here because I think of it more as an all-around Key West institution than just a breakfast stop, but it is still a place to keep on your radar.

If you like historic restaurants, casual food, and places with a long-standing local reputation, Pepe’s is one to consider.

How I Would Choose Where to Eat Breakfast in Key West

If you want a classic breakfast with a big menu, I would choose Sunny Eggs Café and go early.

If you want the best serious coffee stop, I would go to Doing Work Coffee.

If you want a local-feeling coffee shop where you can sit for a while, I would choose Funky Rooster.

If you want a bakery morning, I would choose Old Town Bakery or La Grignote.

If you want French café food, I would look at Frenchie’s Café.

If you want a Sunday brunch experience, I would choose Tempt at The Saint Hotel.

If you want a quieter, more elevated breakfast, I would choose Café Marquesa.

If you want something fresh and a little different, I would look at The Koffie House.

Key West has plenty of breakfast restaurants, but the best choice really depends on the type of morning you want. Some mornings call for a full plate with eggs, potatoes, and coffee. Some mornings call for a croissant and iced chai. Both are valid. Vacation is a very serious breakfast research opportunity.

If you are planning the rest of your meals too, I would use this breakfast guide with my Best Restaurants in Key West so you have a good mix of casual breakfasts, bakeries, lunches, and dinners.

What to Pack

For walking around Old Town between breakfast spots, coffee shops, and sightseeing, I like having a small hands-free bag like this Phone and Wallet Crossbody Strap.

A Clutch Powerbank is also helpful if you are taking photos, using maps, and being generally aggressive with your phone battery.

And because Key West is hot and sunny, I would also pack SuperGoop Face Sunscreen and a Brita Water Bottle, especially if you are walking most of the day.

The tulip fields in the Netherlands look exactly like the photos, except the photos don’t capture how massive the color blocks actually are stretching across the countryside. Or the windmills. Or the sheep randomly standing in the middle of everything like they don’t know they’re in the most photogenic country on earth.

The honest caveat: tulip season moves fast, the fields rotate every year, and peak bloom is not a guarantee, it depends on the weather, the harvest schedule, and a little bit of luck. But that’s also part of what makes it feel less like a tourist attraction and more like something you actually found.

Amsterdam has a way of making you feel like you need to see everything, and then rewarding you most when you slow down anyway. The museums and canal cruises are worth it, but so is just wandering neighborhoods, eating whatever looks good, and sitting along the canals with a grilled cheese and nowhere to be.

There’s a version of Gatlinburg that’s all fudge shops and tourist crowds, and then there’s the version that actually makes you want to come back.

Here’s everything worth doing downtown, in the order I’d do it: 🏔️

✨ Start at @gatlinburgskypark before the crowds hit
✨ Walk the strip mid-morning when it’s still manageable
✨ @googooclusters stop (see my post from Tuesday: don’t skip it)
✨ Dinner at one of the local spots off the main drag
✨ Wander back out at night when the lights are on and it gets actually pretty

This isn’t your overscheduled Smoky Mountain itinerary. It’s more of a “here’s what I’d actually do if I had one solid day” kind of list.
