I’ve rounded up my favorite spots for lunch in Birmingham, broken down by category — because sometimes you want healthy, sometimes you want classic comfort, and sometimes you just want something that makes your taste buds throw a party.
Whether you’re in town for the weekend or plotting your next food-fueled road trip, this list will help you find your new favorite midday meal in the Magic City.

Wasabi Joe’s Food Truck: Best Food Truck Lunch in Birmingham
Wasabi Joe’s is not your average food truck. Every time we come to Birmingham, this spot is a must for lunch — it’s that good. Our favorites include the Cowboy Roll (for those who don’t like seafood), which has steak, avocado, cream cheese, and sesame seeds. Pro tip: get the umagi sauce drizzled on top for extra flavor!
We also love the Rick Roll — spicy tuna, steak, cream cheese, ninja sauce, umami, and Dorito chips for crunch. Yes, you read that right: Doritos. It’s wild, it works, and it’s delicious. The nachos are another must-try, especially if you’re sharing. Wasabi Joe’s is one of those Birmingham gems you’ll crave long after you’ve left — fast, flavorful, and totally unique.
If you’re exploring the city on a weekend or checking out one of the local markets (like the ones I highlight in my Birmingham Farmers Markets guide), keep an eye out for this truck. It’s worth tracking down.

Chop N Fresh: Best Healthy Lunch in Birmingham
If you’re craving something light, fresh, and still satisfying, Chop N Fresh is where you need to be. Located in Mountain Brook’s Lane Parke development — right near the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and the Grand Bohemian Hotel — this locally owned spot nails the balance between fast, healthy, and actually delicious.
Their menu revolves around chopped salads, wraps, and grain bowls made to order with crisp produce, lean proteins, and house-made dressings. You can build your own or pick from their signature creations like the “SoCal” (avocado and grilled chicken) or “Sweet Heat” (spicy chickpeas and jalapeños).
When we went, we ordered the Strawberry Bae — a perfect mix of fresh strawberries, goat cheese, candied pecans, and grilled chicken — and the Mexican Elote Bowl with roasted corn, black beans, avocado, and creamy chipotle dressing. Both were incredible.
The atmosphere is clean and bright, with a friendly vibe and an outdoor patio that’s perfect for lingering. And since this spot is just a minute’s walk from Jeni’s Ice Cream, I say make it a two-stop lunch. Chop N Fresh is hands-down one of the best healthy dining options in Birmingham’s village scene.
The Front Porch: Best Classy Lunch in Birmingham
Nestled in the heart of Crestline Village, The Front Porch lives up to its name — it feels like you’re hanging out on a friend’s porch, sipping a cold drink, and enjoying Southern comfort food done right.
The vibe is laid-back yet polished, with indoor seating and a large outdoor patio that’s perfect for brunch, lunch, or dinner. The menu blends modern and traditional Southern cuisine, offering favorites like shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes, burgers, and fresh salads. Seasonal specials rotate in, highlighting local ingredients.
We loved The Front Porch for its friendly service and consistent food. The cocktails are solid, the atmosphere is easygoing, and it’s the kind of place that makes you want to stay awhile. If you’re staying at the Renaissance Birmingham Ross Bridge Resort, this spot is just a short drive away — perfect for a midday meal before heading back to the pool.

Jim ’N Nick’s BBQ: Best Casual Lunch in Birmingham
A Birmingham staple since 1985, Jim ’N Nick’s Bar-B-Q started right here in the Southside neighborhood before expanding across the Southeast. Father-and-son duo Jim and Nick Pihakis built it from a humble neighborhood joint into a Southern icon, and one bite in, you’ll understand why.
The menu covers every barbecue craving — pulled pork, brisket, smoked chicken, ribs, and sausage — all cooked low and slow over hickory wood. Sides include creamy mac and cheese, collard greens, baked beans, and slaw. But the true star here? Those famous cheese biscuits. Small, golden, and slightly sweet, they’re dangerously addictive and arrive at your table before your meal.
Everything is made from scratch daily, from the sauces to the pie crusts. The vibe is casual, the staff is friendly, and the smell alone will make your mouth water. Whether you’re grabbing takeout after sightseeing in Five Points or sitting down for a proper feast, Jim ’N Nick’s is the definition of classic Birmingham comfort food.

Hattie B’s Hot Chicken: Best Classic Southern Lunch in Birmingham
Bringing Nashville heat to the heart of Alabama, Hattie B’s Hot Chicken serves up one of the best lunches in Birmingham. Located on 27th Street South, just minutes from downtown, this place is always buzzing — and yes, the line is worth it.

The menu is built around their legendary fried chicken, with six spice levels ranging from mild “Southern” to the tear-inducing “Shut the Cluck Up!” (choose wisely). Go for tenders, sandwiches, wings, or a half bird, and load up on classic sides like pimento mac and cheese, collard greens, crinkle-cut fries, and creamy coleslaw.
The interior is modern yet cozy, with rustic touches that make it feel authentically Southern. It’s the perfect lunch spot whether you’re chasing spice or just want crispy perfection. Pro tip: order the medium if you want flavor without regret, and finish with the banana pudding for dessert — it’s the best cool-down after the heat.
