The best sunset spots in Sedona range from paved scenic overlooks with no hiking required to short trails and elevated mesa-top viewpoints. Sedona sunsets are especially impressive because the fading light changes the color of the red rocks, sometimes making them appear even brighter just before the sun disappears.
Airport Mesa is my top recommendation for first-time visitors, but there are several good alternatives depending on how much walking you want to do and whether you prefer an easy overlook or a more active evening.
If you are looking for the classic Sedona sunset, Airport Mesa Scenic Overlook is the place I would recommend first.
The overlook provides panoramic views of several of Sedona’s most recognizable red rock formations. You do not need to hike or navigate a rocky trail, making this one of the easiest Sedona sunset views for families, first-time visitors, and anyone who wants a memorable evening without much effort.
We arrived around 6:45 p.m. for sunset and still found plenty of available parking. People had started gathering around the overlook, but the crowd never felt overwhelming.
Parking and crowd levels can vary depending on the time of year, so I would still arrive about 45 to 60 minutes before sunset during peak seasons. Arriving early also gives you more time to find a comfortable viewing spot and take photos before the light begins to change.

The Airport Mesa Vortex Site sits above the lower parking area and offers wide-open views in nearly every direction.
The hike is extremely short, but do not let the distance fool you. The route climbs steeply over slickrock, so it feels more challenging than a typical paved walk. It only takes a few minutes to reach the main viewing area, but you still need to watch your footing.
Once you reach the top, you can see across a large section of Sedona’s red rock landscape. The elevated position gives you more expansive panoramic views than the nearby scenic overlook and plenty of different angles for sunset photography.
Whether you believe in Sedona’s famous vortex energy or not, the scenery alone makes the short climb worthwhile.
Wear shoes with good traction. The route is steep enough that sturdy footwear will be helpful, especially when walking back down after sunset when the rocks may be harder to see.
A small hiking backpack is useful for carrying water, an extra layer, and a flashlight without needing to hold everything during the climb. I use this small Osprey backpack for hiking and other active travel days.

Yavapai Vista Trail is a good choice if you want to combine an easy hike with sunset views.
The short trail overlooks Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte, and the surrounding red rock landscape. The elevation gain is relatively gentle, and you do not need to complete a long or strenuous hike to reach the scenic sections.
Compared with Airport Mesa, Yavapai Vista can feel less crowded while still giving you the open red rock views Sedona is known for. It also gives photographers several different compositions rather than limiting everyone to one main overlook. It only had about 10 people there total and there is so much space you’ll feel like you have it to yourself.
Allow enough time to complete the trail before it becomes dark. Even though the hike is short, the terrain will be easier to navigate while there is still some daylight.

Bell Rock is one of Sedona’s most recognizable landmarks, and the evening light makes the formation appear even more dramatic.
You do not need to hike far to enjoy the view. Bell Rock can be seen from near the parking area, making this one of the easiest places to watch sunset in Sedona if you have limited time or do not want to walk very much.
You can also follow the Bell Rock Trail for a short distance to find different viewing angles. This is completely optional, so you can decide how much walking you want to do based on the weather, remaining daylight, and how tired you are after the rest of your day.
Bell Rock Vista is also convenient for families or anyone who wants an iconic Sedona view without committing to a full evening hike. Doe Mountain is one of the best sunset hikes in Sedona for travelers willing to put in a little more effort.
The trail climbs through a series of switchbacks before reaching the flat top of the mesa. From the top, hikers have panoramic 360-degree views stretching across the surrounding red rock landscape.
Unlike the drive-up overlooks, Doe Mountain requires more planning. You will need enough time to hike up before sunset and safely complete the descent as daylight fades. Carrying a flashlight or headlamp would be a smart precaution.
It may also feel less crowded than some of Sedona’s more accessible overlooks, especially once you reach the mesa top.
The best option depends mostly on how much hiking you want to do.
Choose Airport Mesa Scenic Overlook if this is your first trip to Sedona or you want the easiest panoramic sunset view.
Choose the Airport Mesa Vortex Site if you are comfortable with a very short but steep climb.
Choose Yavapai Vista Trail if you want an easy hike with views of Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte.
Choose Bell Rock Vista if you want an iconic red rock sunset with almost no walking.
Choose Doe Mountain Trail if you want a more active sunset hike and elevated 360-degree views.

Arrive earlier than you think you need to, especially at Airport Mesa and other popular Sedona viewpoints. Parking lots can fill during busy travel periods, and arriving early gives you time to enjoy the changing light rather than rushing directly to the overlook.
Wear sturdy shoes if your sunset plans include slickrock or an unpaved trail. Even short routes can become harder to navigate after the sun goes down.
A flashlight or headlamp is also useful for any location that requires walking back to your vehicle in the dark. Your phone flashlight can work in an emergency, but having your hands free is much easier on rocky terrain.
Temperatures can drop quickly after sunset, so bring a light layer even if the afternoon feels warm. My small Osprey backpack has enough room for an extra layer, water, and a few hiking essentials without being bulky.
Bring more water than you think you will need, particularly during warmer months. A Brita water bottle is easy to refill throughout the trip and carry on shorter trails.
Sunset is also one of the best times for photos, but trying to balance a phone on a random rock is rarely the most reliable plan. An iPhone tripod makes it easier to take group photos, steady low-light shots, or capture everyone in the photo instead of leaving one person behind the camera.
The main thing is choosing a location that fits your comfort level and arriving early enough to enjoy it without rushing. Sedona gives you plenty of options, whether you want to walk ten feet from your car or climb to the top of a mesa.

The Palatinate Forest and Humberg Tower views are close by. If you want a packed itinerary this isn’t your town, but if you like good food and nowhere to be, you’ll love it.
